5. Mythos Greek 


The Mousaka is marvellous! This hidden gem on Fairview St. will have your date smiling and stroking your hand while gazing into your eyes with wonder. Dishes include all the usual suspects, such as oregano, mint, garlic, onion, dill and bay laurel leaves, which pack so much flavour. From grilled lamb (Paidakia) to breaded, tender lean pork cutlets (Lemonati Kotoleta), there’s plenty to choose from. Executive chef Andreas Yerondais will make you feel as though you’ve been whisked away to the beautiful blue waters in the Mediterranean. Service is downright impeccable, which naturally has us saying opa! We just wish it stayed open later (Mythos also closes at 10 p.m.).

4. Yolanda’s Spuntino Casa


This rustic modern Tuscan farmhouse in Bronte Harbour is gorgeous, with a mix of marble tables, pendant lighting ,sconces and a retractable roof on the patio! (The heritage home is from 1843 … one look at the beautiful patio and I know where I’ll be parked all summer!) Created by the Mercanti family of Hamilton, the menu highlights sustainable seafood and classic italian spuntino (snacks or bites). Yolanda’s - home to coastal Italian fare - offers the best appetizer I’ve had in years. Simply put, the Zucchini Fritto was amazing. Vegetables are paper-thin (not breaded!) and topped with honey, Buffalo ricotta cheese, and Parma Ham (fancy bacon, if you will) and fresh mint. It’s an absolute must-have! The grilled calamari was another delicious starter, while the gnocchi, made in-house, was incredible, featuring truffle cream. The charcuterie board comes with two cheese selections and salumi, alongside a delectable oil and balsamic reduction. The knotted bread is to die for! I could eat those everyday for the rest of my life. For dessert, the tiramisu was light and fresh, and reminiscent of pudding. Service is stellar. Run, don’t walk, to Yolanda’s and buy me a drink on the patio!

3 - The Coop Wicked Chicken


A hip new casual dining option has arrived in downtown Burlington, where the vibe is cheeky and the food is “going to ruffle some feathers.” Brant St. is home to the Coop Wicked Chicken … you may recognize the name from Hamilton’s original King St. W. location. Featuring lunch, dinner, and boozy weekend brunch, Coop Wicked Chicken offers fresh in-house food made with high-quality ingredients.Offerings include Deep-Fried Deviled Eggs, Sriracha Honey Cauliflower, Hardcore Pulled Chicken Poutine, and Chicken & Waffles (topped with an egg). The atmosphere is unpretentious and fun.

Sushi Masayuki is probably the best Japanese restaurant in the GTA and definitely comparable to the top spots in Toronto proper. It’s the best in Halton region by far. This is a real Japanese restaurant because, quite simply, it’s owned and run by Japanese operators. Authenticity is key and the chefs at Masayuki have a plethora of experience with Japanese cuisine. Masayuki Takabe has more than 25 years under his belt as a sushi chef, working in popular high-end Japanese restaurants in Toronto and at Oakville’s Mye. Kitchen chef Takeshi Okada trained in Tokyo from the age of 15 and is among the top Japanese chefs in Canada who specialize in “kaiseki.” The quality of the food here is unparalleled, so if you really want to impress, you’d better head to Sushi Masayuki. Just watch out because the sashimi bill will add up real quick, but you pay for quality. Make sure you book a reservation, as this place is rather quaint.

1 - Noble Bistro


Serving up fine dining without stuffiness, Noble offers a chef-inspired menu-boasting farm to fork cuisine. There were some surprises. For gluten-free folks, the chickpea fries ($7), served with a sriracha mayo, were unconventional, crispy, and perfectly salted. The tuna tartare was tasty, while the salmon, scallops (in Polenta Agnolloti) and roasted chicken were perfectly cooked. The quiche was flavourful, with a kick of goat cheese and a tough crust. The man behind the menu, JohnRoss Woodland (winner of Chopped Canada), ranks among the top chefs in the country. Naturally, there’s also an excellent selection of wines to enjoy alongside your meal.
