This Bronte Village restobar, south of Lakeshore Rd., absolutely blew me away with their pizza. The bread is freshly baked in-house and that salami … oh my. It just might be the best sliced meat I’ve ever tasted. This margherita pizza with spicy salami brought out my inner ninja turtle. Then there’s the Beef House Sliders, with bourbon bacon jam and vintage cheddar … Why does everything here taste so great? Catch Hospitality Group (which owns a slew of the best restos in Oakville, including this one) knocked this one out of the proverbial ballpark. This casual resto-bar has a farm-fresh focus and sources locally when possible. Good luck scoring a table on a Friday night … it’s worth the wait. The beer selection rocks, and so does the chill vibe. (My only gripe with the place is they’ve removed the phenomenal beet hummus from the menu. It’s been replaced with a pumpkin version but it’s not the same. Please bring it back!)
This burger was super-filling. The patty was handmade and it was nearly as thick as my mom makes them (she says I don’t eat enough meat and am thereby lacking essential nutrients). Well, nothing’s lacking in this beautiful piece of beef. Served with lettuce, tomato and pickle, it’s a simple burger which tastes great. (So was the house salad — it was fresh and had a delicious vinaigrette). This Ontario St. neighbourhood bar is covered in damask wallpaper, boasts a digital jukebox, and has ultra-comfy tufted booths. Naturally, locals love it. The burger was inhaled plain — ketchup or mustard weren’t necessary. The bun was soft and hit the spot. You must try it.
This low-key Italian joint on Brant St. is all you need for a great Italian meal. It’s unpretentious, staff are super nice, the food is delicious, and you get to cut your own thin-crust pizza with scissors. The Lobster Ravioli, made in-house, is the top seller, we’re told … it features pasta pillows filled with Atlantic lobster, plus a decadent herbed butter cream sauce. The rav is creamy-yet-light and tastes just right. The Olive Ascolina dish is super fun and unique — large green olives are stuffed with cheese then fried. They’re lightly salted and would taste great with a pint. Also try the tender Veal Marsala, in a creamy mushroom sauce. End your meal with Tiramisu — it’s not too sweet and tastes oh-so-great! We’re happy to see Burlington is embracing this Port Credit resto, where authentic stone oven pizza is also a major draw.
You may recognize the name from Toronto (it has locations in King West, Bayview, and Danforth) … this low-key North Service Rd. resto serves up big flavour, especially in the wood-fired pizza department. Local ingredients are used. You’ll definitely want to take in the grilled calamari and shrimp, served with tomatoes, olives and capers. The funghi pizza (with truffled honey — it’s phenomenal) is everything. The honey adds a subtle sweetness that pairs perfectly with fresh, meaty mushrooms. Quality can be tasted. Make sure you save room for dessert … the Salted Caramel Budino is to die for. Pudding is topped with whipped cream and a delicious Amaretto cookie crumble. Yum!
Location, location, location. This long-time east-end favourite has a (posh, not kitschy) nautical theme, and it’s elegant and fun all wrapped in one. (It’s the photo featured at the very top). Plus, it’s located in the Oakville Entertainment Centrum - which we know isn’t an easy location for restos, or patrons trying to park. But this one is still going strong, making it the optimal place to start your night (dinner and a movie, everyone? … try driving into the Centrum around 8 p.m. on a weekend!) Head chef/owner Michel Fronteddu’s team uses the freshest, finest ingredients to hand-craft artisanal cuisine (from rolling gnocchi, churning gelato, to using homegrown organic herbs). There’s also a dedicated bar/lounge area, making it the perfect spot for martinis and appetizers, with plush seating throughout the resto. A massive renovation has only made this place better. Service is stellar, and so is essentially everything on the menu.
