This Peruvian/Latin fusion gem has lots of menu items that are a delight to taste. But I’m a devotee of the yellow sauce (it’s called huancaina and made with cheese, potatoes, spices, and hot Peruvian yellow peppers). Between delicious cassava fries dipped in this mouth-watering sauce, tender beef hearts with roasted potatoes and corn kernels, and tamale on a plantain leaf, our dining experience was off to a great start. The ceviche was fantastic! Our mains included chicken stew (with yellow sauce!), beef stew (it’s incredibly juicy and reminds me of my south Indian mom’s goat curry), and mahi mahi topped with calamari and shrimp (it was good but not as tasty as anything with the yellow sauce). For dessert, the crispy yet soft shortbread cake came with a drizzle of dulce de leche. Overall, it’s a delightful dining experience. Encore!
Location, location, location. Real estate will score you top points when you’re sitting in a restaurant overlooking Spencer Smith Park. The view sells itself and so does the atmosphere. The menu offers seafood, of course, with items ranging from Mussel & Clam Linguini to Grilled Confit King Oyster Mushrooms to Parmesan Baked Lobster. Then there’s steak. Sides include Duck Fat Fries. If that isn’t fancy, I don’t know what is (though I certainly wouldn’t be ordering those while trying to exude a sexy vibe!). Great eats await at this hands-down favourite, where the food and service are divine. Spencer’s closes at 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays so head there for dinner then catch the movie!
This cute little pizzeria on Derry Rd. W. (next to the Hawthorne Cafe ) doesn’t look like much at first glance. The decor is simple, with wine on display. But the pizza is everything! A huge slice took several minutes to inhale and didn’t stop me from going back for more. The sauce tastes homemade because it is — everything is created in-house. With a great crust and flavourful cheese and meat in each bite, drizzling chilli oil (also prepared at Portabello’s) took it to an unbelievable level! The server was really friendly and helpful — she even reminded me to grab a cell phone charger on the way out. If that isn’t fabulous customer service, I’m not sure what is.
The dress code is casual, however, the food is anything but. The Paradiso Burger tastes Incredible (hold up, grammar nerds — that’s an intentional capital ‘I’). Seasoned meat - a great combination of Angus beef and chorizo sausage - is unbelievably satisfying. The house-made patty is flavoured and tastes incredible as-is. One bite in, and I’m in burger paradise. This thick patty is topped with smoked cheddar, house-made ketchup and sweet pickles, smoked honey dijon mustard, then served with herb roasted mini red potatoes. Impressing Oakville diners for 20 years (there’s also a Burlington location on Pine St.) you’ve gotta make a reservation and get your burger on!
Location, location, location. This long-time east-end favourite has a (posh, not kitschy) nautical theme, and it’s elegant and fun all wrapped in one. (It’s the photo featured at the very top). Plus, it’s located in the Oakville Entertainment Centrum - which we know isn’t an easy location for restos, or patrons trying to park. But this one is still going strong, making it the optimal place to start your night (dinner and a movie, everyone? … try driving into the Centrum around 8 p.m. on a weekend!) Head chef/owner Michel Fronteddu’s team uses the freshest, finest ingredients to hand-craft artisanal cuisine (from rolling gnocchi, churning gelato, to using homegrown organic herbs). There’s also a dedicated bar/lounge area, making it the perfect spot for martinis and appetizers, with plush seating throughout the resto. A massive renovation has only made this place better. Service is stellar, and so is essentially everything on the menu.
