This cute little pizzeria on Derry Rd. W. (next to the Hawthorne Cafe ) doesn’t look like much at first glance. The decor is simple, with wine on display. But the pizza is everything! A huge slice took several minutes to inhale and didn’t stop me from going back for more. The sauce tastes homemade because it is — everything is created in-house. With a great crust and flavourful cheese and meat in each bite, drizzling chilli oil (also prepared at Portabello’s) took it to an unbelievable level! The server was really friendly and helpful — she even reminded me to grab a cell phone charger on the way out. If that isn’t fabulous customer service, I’m not sure what is.
The Classic Back Porch Burger is so good I nearly weep while chowing down. Featuring fresh AAA ground chuck that’s hand-pattied, it’s slathered in cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce, and an Ace Bakery kaiser. Emma’s burger almost has me licking my fingers in public. But then I remember I’m at this cottage in south Burlington where Emma’s - formally known as the Estaminet Standard Hotel - opened in 1919 and famous people such as legendary musician Louis Armstrong and former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker (aka Dief the Chief) dined here, so I should exercise restraint. The chicken burger is also going to hit the proverbial spot!
Location, location, location. This long-time east-end favourite has a (posh, not kitschy) nautical theme, and it’s elegant and fun all wrapped in one. (It’s the photo featured at the very top). Plus, it’s located in the Oakville Entertainment Centrum - which we know isn’t an easy location for restos, or patrons trying to park. But this one is still going strong, making it the optimal place to start your night (dinner and a movie, everyone? … try driving into the Centrum around 8 p.m. on a weekend!) Head chef/owner Michel Fronteddu’s team uses the freshest, finest ingredients to hand-craft artisanal cuisine (from rolling gnocchi, churning gelato, to using homegrown organic herbs). There’s also a dedicated bar/lounge area, making it the perfect spot for martinis and appetizers, with plush seating throughout the resto. A massive renovation has only made this place better. Service is stellar, and so is essentially everything on the menu.
Sushi Masayuki is probably the best Japanese restaurant in the GTA and definitely comparable to the top spots in Toronto proper. It’s the best in Halton region by far. This is a real Japanese restaurant because, quite simply, it’s owned and run by Japanese operators. Authenticity is key and the chefs at Masayuki have a plethora of experience with Japanese cuisine. Masayuki Takabe has more than 25 years under his belt as a sushi chef, working in popular high-end Japanese restaurants in Toronto and at Oakville’s Mye. Kitchen chef Takeshi Okada trained in Tokyo from the age of 15 and is among the top Japanese chefs in Canada who specialize in “kaiseki.” The quality of the food here is unparalleled, so if you really want to impress, you’d better head to Sushi Masayuki. Just watch out because the sashimi bill will add up real quick, but you pay for quality. Make sure you book a reservation, as this place is rather quaint.
The menu is curated and the offerings are fabulous. This cute little downtown Oakville spot opened its doors in October 2016 and is an under-the-radar dining experience when it comes to great Sicilian fare. If you’ve never been, start with the fried artichokes (incredible!) and order the steak (equally fabulous but keep in mind it’s not offered daily since the meat selection is changed up). The resto is casual yet authentic, kid-friendly and - more importantly - offers a solid wine list, plus cocktails and beer. Service is very friendly. You must go.
