This cute little pizzeria on Derry Rd. W. (next to the Hawthorne Cafe) doesn’t look like much at first glance. The decor is simple, with wine on display. But the pizza is everything! A huge slice took several minutes to inhale and didn’t stop me from going back for more. The sauce tastes homemade because it is — everything is created in-house. With a great crust and flavourful cheese and meat in each bite, drizzling chilli oil (also prepared at Portabello’s) took it to an unbelievable level! The server was really friendly and helpful — she even reminded me to grab a cell phone charger on the way out. If that isn’t fabulous customer service, I’m not sure what is.
Hand-spun gourmet pizzas are served atop red and white checkered nylon tablecloths at this old-style cafe in the city’s north end along Kingsridge Dr. Sports jerseys dominate the decor, making it a great neighbourhood hangout if you want to watch the soccer game locally with fellow footie fans. The space offers tables and booths. When the server arrived with a stand yielding a pepperoni pizza, it was so greasy it reminded me of a date I went on with a guy in New York City. With a perfect super-thin crust and great blend of herbs, Peppino’s pizza is straight up awesome.

Easily one of the best restaurants in Ontario - and even Canada, Oliver’s offers a phenomenal fine dining experience and is going strong after four decades. The menu features the best of the best: USDA Prime steaks, fresh seafood, and an extensive wine list. This is some next-level fine dining, minus the white tablecloths … even the ice cream is made in-house! You’ll find amazing service without the pretentious aura. The menu features high-quality ingredients, while the staff’s attention to detail and presentation is simply on point. The resto seats 120, complete with a private area that can be separated into two rooms for parties. With dim lighting, the beautifully designed restaurant is accented with gorgeous chandeliers, art, a mix of wood and rich tones, plus the wine cellar (if you didn’t know, Oliver’s wine list earned the prestigious New York’s Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for five years running). The experience is downright unforgettable.
This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept burger secret. Just order The Burger and wait for it to arrive. Take in the glorious horseshoe-shaped bar and industrial light fixtures and wooden chairs with colourful legs. Try not to drool over the food or decor. Decked out between a bun with black-and-white sesame seeds you’ll find a thick grilled patty made in-house, like everything on the curated menu. It’s wrapped in prosciutto and drowned in melted Gorgonzola and served with frites and house-made ketchup, which tastes so healthy it feels as if I’m eating clean for just a split second. A few bites in, I had to put The Burger down and just nod at it to convey appreciation and respect. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Chase the Spaghetti Carbonara - featuring pasta made in-house, plus double-smoked bacon, garlic, arugula, and parmesan - with suds … they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer — nearly 100 varieties.
If you’re an Indian food lover in Burlington, I don’t think this comes as a surprise to you. They’ve been around for some time and have established themselves as one of the premier Indian restaurants in the city. The basics like Butter Chicken, and Palak Paneer are made beautifully. This is often a good indicator of what the rest of their menu will be like. Their Biryani is no different! A colourful and fluffy rice dish with spices and meats (or meat substitutes), a Biryani is often had as a meal all by itself. At times it’s accompanied with a yogurt-based sauce that is meant to moisten and possibly cool down the spice of the dish itself. While Bombay Grill’s biryani is not too spicy, it is incredibly flavourful and a must try on their menu!
