Serving up fine dining without stuffiness, Noble offers a chef-inspired menu-boasting farm-to-fork cuisine. There were some surprises. For gluten-free folks, the chickpea fries ($7), served with a sriracha mayo, were unconventional, crispy, and perfectly salted. The tuna tartare was tasty, while the salmon, scallops (in Polenta Agnolloti) and roasted chicken were perfectly cooked. The quiche was flavourful, with a kick of goat cheese and a tough crust. The man behind the menu, JohnRoss Woodland (winner of Chopped Canada), ranks among the top chefs in the country. Naturally, there’s also an excellent selection of wines to enjoy alongside your meal.
There’s something about the sweet sauce … this tiny pizza place keeps on pleasing. It’s cheap, it’s hot, and you don’t have to drive in circles to find parking. And as soon as you bite into that crust, you’ll know why it’s consistently ranked as one of the best in Burlington. ‘Nuff said.
Price for a large pepperoni (pick-up): $8.99
Oh, Zesty. First they won me over with their shawarma and now their Classic Burger … It’s the next best thing from homemade. Zesty’s burger is fresh, it’s halal, and it’s cheap. Made from scratch, with or without cheddar cheese, it’s overflowing with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, and mayo. The sesame seed bun is squishy and tastes just right.. Simplicity has never been so delicious. This is ‘fast-food’ at its best. Zesty has two locations in Burlington and you can ask for shawarma toppings on your burger, but in that case, why wouldn’t you just order shawarma? Zesty’s owners hail from Morocco, which is now on my bucket list.
Grill or griddle?: Grill
Wings are well done at this popular pub — EddieO’s nailed the delicate balance of a crispy coating with tender meat on the inside. Their wings are as addictive as they come, served with a great Jager BBQ sauce. The pub’s industrial aesthetic, complete with exposed beams, has large, comfy booths which are multi-staggered for optimum privacy (so y’all can lick your fingers in peace!)
Price (single order): $13
Fav Sauce: Jager BBQ
Downtown Burlington’s food scene just got a boost, Italian-style. The Express Italian Eatery has opened along Lakeshore Rd. at Brant St. and it’s serving up pizza, pasta, steak and seafood. The new restaurant opened last month in the former Salvatore’s spot. It’s from Hamilton — there’s a location by McMaster University and another on Grays Rd. closer to Stoney Creek. Burlington is the third location. The Express is named after the train in Italy which weaved through Bolzano, Milano, Florence, Bologna, Rome, Calabria and Sicily. The menu represents a fusion of northern, central and southern Italian cuisine. What’s in store? Made to order wood fire pizzas, fresh in- house pasta and hand tossed gourmet salads. You’ll really want to get the Ravioli al Brasato di Manzo. Why? Pillows are stuffed with braised beef then topped with sauteed red onions and mushrooms. It’s comfort food that’s flavoured impeccably (and reminds me of my university roommate Tania’s pot roast … gone Italian). The Gnocchi, made in-house, arrives in a dreamy, creamy Rose sauce. It’s topped with fried sweet potato chips for a layer of texture. If you’re into sharing, you’ll want to order the Venetian pizza ($16). It’s got a thin crust plus asiago, soppressata, fresh rapini and pepperoncino, made in-house. It’s fantastic and perfectly crispy. Service is great, and here’s something special for the ladies: They give out blankets on the patio if you’re cold (or inside when the A/C is blasting.
