Celadon House is an absolute gem of a restaurant that we discovered in the early 2000s before it moved to its current (and more spacious) location at Ford Drive and Royal Windsor. Specializing in what they call Asian comfort food, the dedicated (and incredibly friendly) husband and wife team behind Celadon House offer diners a personal and memorable restaurant experience. In terms of food, pretty much each and every menu item is comforting and delicious. Some choice favourites are the sweet and savory hunan dumplings (steamed pork dumplings covered in peanut and soy ginger sauce), the garlic rice and the superbly spicy mapo tofu. Another favourite dish is the coconut beef curry, which comes with melt-in-your-mouth tendon chunks. In terms of beverages, you have to try the coconut frappe and the ginger tea--both are delicious in very different ways.
Sushi-Ya Japan is a small restaurant serving up big taste in a prime location: downtown Milton. You’ll find it just off of Main St., along Martin. You’ll see men in suits, depending on the time of day, talking business over maki. Or there may be solo diners who need to get their sushi on, solo. Here you’ll find a relaxed spot serving up rolls, teriyaki, noodle dishes, plus Korean specialties (and you may overhear them speaking Korean in the kitchen). Start with miso soup or salad (with miso dressing) and edamame, then fill yourself up on a salmon or tuna combination. It’s equal parts simple and delicious. It’s a perfect place to eat healthy and stay trendy. This is a classic hidden gem. You’re welcome!
This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept burger secret. Just order The Burger and wait for it to arrive. Take in the glorious horseshoe-shaped bar and industrial light fixtures and wooden chairs with colourful legs. Try not to drool over the food or decor. Decked out between a bun with black-and-white sesame seeds you’ll find a thick grilled patty made in-house, like everything on the curated menu. It’s wrapped in prosciutto and drowned in melted Gorgonzola and served with frites and house-made ketchup, which tastes so healthy it feels as if I’m eating clean for just a split second. A few bites in, I had to put The Burger down and just nod at it to convey appreciation and respect. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Chase the Spaghetti Carbonara - featuring pasta made in-house, plus double-smoked bacon, garlic, arugula, and parmesan - with suds … they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer — nearly 100 varieties. This tiny-fine dining restaurant provides an array of gourmet, chef-made menu items (and libations, obviously). The hand-made gnudi is created in-house and stands out as a star dish, featuring lemon-thyme ricotta, roasted pearl onions, mushrooms, and walnut pesto. It’s equal parts light yet addictive. Popular items include the delicious mushroom pizza, with buttered leeks and truffle oil, and braised beef yorkies, which is oh-so-comforting on any given day. So’s the cornbread served under the crab cakes. And the chicken florentine crepe is something to write home about.
1) Machu Picchu
Peruvian food might be trending hard in Toronto, but this Oakville resto beat a lot of new arrivals to the punch. This Peruvian/Latin fusion gem has lots of menu items that are a delight to taste. But I’m a devotee of the yellow sauce (it’s called huancaina and made with cheese, potatoes, spices, and hot Peruvian yellow peppers). Between delicious cassava fries (yucca frita) dipped in this mouth-watering sauce, tender beef hearts with roasted potatoes and corn kernels, and tamale on a plantain leaf, our dining experience was off to a great start. The ceviche was fantastic! Our mains included chicken stew (with yellow sauce!), beef stew (it’s incredibly juicy and reminds me of my south Indian mom’s goat curry), and mahi mahi topped with calamari and shrimp (it was good but not as tasty as anything with the yellow sauce). For dessert, the crispy yet soft shortbread cake came with a drizzle of dulce de leche. Overall, it’s a delightful dining experience. Encore!
