Wings are well done at this popular pub — EddieO’s nailed the delicate balance of a crispy coating with tender meat on the inside. Their wings are as addictive as they come, served with a great Jager BBQ sauce. The pub’s industrial aesthetic, complete with exposed beams, has large, comfy booths which are multi-staggered for optimum privacy (so y’all can lick your fingers in peace!)
There’s good chicken and there’s chicken that’s tasty as cluck (that wasn’t a typo). Brant St. is home to this fun, laidback resto … you may recognize the name from Hamilton’s original King St. W. location. Doors opened in March 2017 and locals are flocking to the place. Featuring lunch, dinner, and boozy weekend brunch, Coop Wicked Chicken offers fresh in-house food made with high-quality ingredients. Offerings include Deep-Fried Deviled Eggs (fantastic!), Sriracha Honey Cauliflower (for the vegans in your life), Hardcore Pulled Chicken Poutine, and Chicken & Waffles topped with an egg — this was absolutely phenomenal. The atmosphere is unpretentious and fun. Service is great.
This modern Italian restaurant in Bronte is absolute perfection. Voted one of the best restaurants in Canada (no pressure!), the bar was high and the folks at Cucci certainly didn’t disappoint. To start, assorted bread (cut to order from an array of fresh baguettes) is served with sage-and-roasted-garlic-butter. Delish! Next, we had the grilled calamari, which was so, so good. But it was no match for the real star: Gnocchi. The amazingly creamy Gorgonzola sauce had a light crunch, thanks to walnuts. And the gnocchi, made in-house, was superb. You don’t even have to work to chew anything since it melts in your mouth. It’s one of the most popular items on the menu, alongside the Eggplant Parmesan, which is fantastic with a nice crunchy-yet-cheesy combination. (The baby arugula salad it came with had beautiful orchid petals!). Food and service are exceptional.
This cute little downtown Oakville spot opened its door in October 2016 and is an under-the-radar dining experience when it comes to great Sicilian fare. If you’ve never been, start with the fried artichokes (yum!) and order the steak (equally fabulous but keep in mind it’s not offered daily since the meat selection is changed up). The resto is authentic, kid-friendly and - more importantly - offers a solid wine list, plus cocktails and beer.
Head downtown to ‘restaurant row’ and ask for the Lemon Pavlova. This gluten-free treat includes meringue, mousse, and pomegranate seeds as garnish. It’s light and even though it’s not something typically up my alley, we polished it off pretty quick. This trendy gastropub is gaining popularity among craft beer enthusiasts (there are more than 15 varieties) and night owls alike. Desserts, such as pies, are made in-house (well, if we’re splitting hairs, they’re made next door at Seasons — same owners) and offer the same upscale post-dinner indulgence you’d expect, except it’s served in a casual atmosphere. The kitchen keeps it 100.
