5. Machu Picchu

Oakville

Peruvian food might be trending hard in Toronto, but this Oakville resto beat a lot of new arrivals to the punch. This Peruvian/Latin fusion gem has lots of menu items that are a delight to taste. But I'm a devotee of the yellow sauce (it's called huancaina and made with cheese, potatoes, spices, and hot Peruvian yellow peppers). Between delicious cassava fries (yucca frita) dipped in this mouth-watering sauce, tender beef hearts with roasted potatoes and corn kernels, and tamale on a plantain leaf, our dining experience was off to a great start. The ceviche was fantastic! Our mains included chicken stew (with yellow sauce!), beef stew (it's incredibly juicy and reminds me of my south Indian mom's goat curry), and mahi mahi topped with calamari and shrimp (it was good but not as tasty as anything with the yellow sauce). For dessert, the crispy yet soft shortbread cake came with a drizzle of dulce de leche. Overall, it's a delightful dining experience. Encore!

4. Kerr Street Cafe

Oakville

Kerr Street Cafe and sister company Brothers’ Coffee Roasters (their Notorious espresso blend is fire!) are known for being on point. They plate their meals beautifully and even offer bike racks out front. Their famous all-day breakfast includes French Toast, Chia Pudding, and Pancakes (with rosemary custard, local fruit, bee pollen, creme fraiche). There's also an enormous slice of Healthy Toast, served on sourdough with hummus, alfalfa sprouts, cucumbers, etc. It's equal parts superb and super-filling. Lunch offers up salads, the Burger Queen, a fish burrito, and a smoked chicken and brie sandwich. This Kerr Village staple, featuring a cafe and restaurant, has such a relaxing atmosphere (with plenty of natural light) it’s second only to a day at the spa. Or a day trip to New York City, because it feels like I'm at a posh cafe near Columbia University. The resto is serving dinner and all I have to say is, it’s about time! If you haven’t been, what are you waiting for?

3. Emma's Back Porch & The Water St. Cooker

Burlington

The Classic Back Porch Burger is so good I nearly weep while chowing down. Featuring fresh AAA ground chuck that's hand-pattied, it's slathered in cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce, and an Ace Bakery kaiser. Emma's burger almost has me licking my fingers in public. But then I remember I'm at this cottage in south Burlington where Emma's - formally known as the Estaminet Standard Hotel - opened in 1919 and famous people such as legendary musician Louis Armstrong and former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker (aka Dief the Chief) dined here, so I should exercise restraint. The chicken burger is also going to hit the proverbial spot!

2. Sushi-Ya Japan

Milton

Sushi-Ya Japan is a small restaurant serving up big taste in a prime location: downtown Milton. You'll find it just off of Main St., along Martin. You'll see men in suits, depending on the time of day, talking business over maki. Or there may be solo diners who need to get their sushi on, solo. Here you'll find a relaxed spot serving up rolls, teriyaki, noodle dishes, plus Korean specialties (and you may overhear them speaking Korean in the kitchen). Start with miso soup or salad (with miso dressing) and edamame, then fill yourself up on a salmon or tuna combination. It's equal parts simple and delicious. It's a perfect place to eat healthy and stay trendy. This is a classic hidden gem. You're welcome!

1. Martini House

Burlington

This tiny-fine dining restaurant provides an array of gourmet, chef-made menu items (and libations, obviously). The hand-made gnudi is created in-house and stands out as a star dish, featuring lemon-thyme ricotta, roasted pearl onions, mushrooms, and walnut pesto. It's equal parts light yet addictive. Popular items include the delicious mushroom pizza, with buttered leeks and truffle oil, and braised beef yorkies, which is oh-so-comforting on any given day. So's the cornbread served under the crab cakes. And the chicken florentine crepe is something to write home about.
