You know it’s good when a national newspaper comes knockin’ for some smokin’ BBQ at a mom and pop shop. This family-run resto has been serving up southern BBQ for more than 20 years. In addition to winning accolades by the dozen, they’ve got a Woodbridge location bearing the same name. A few sauces are made in-house, such as the Alabama Slamma, and their smoked wings come doused in their Signature BBQ sauce. Overall, the Hot Creamy Parm is their most popular sauce. It looks dangerously fattening but ain’t nobody got time to count calories when you’re at the best wing joint in Milton!
The good folks at Boon Burger prove you don’t necessarily need meat to create a phenomenally satisfying meal. Their Cowboy burger is the topseller in Burlington and boy, it’s massive. Made from scratch, burgers are handmade, grilled, baked, and served on a whole wheat bun. The black bean patty comes with BBQsauce, “bacun,” lettuce, tomato, and it’s slathered in Bermuda sauce (which really should be called Vegan Big Mac sauce because it tastes gluttonous and McDonald’s has officially been replaced for all cheat meals going forward). This Canadian chain, or “world’s first vegan burger cafe,” has mastered selling plant-based junk food for the masses. Hot sauce and other (less important) condiments are already on the table, surrounded by a massive roll of brown paper towels. Full of farm animals, the environment is quirky. Very friendly staff wear black T-shirts reading ‘boonivore’ on the back. After one bite of the Cowboy, I want one, along with everything on their menu.
The patio and the cold beer … This Lakeshore Rd. resto offers up an in-house brewery and catering. Try getting a seat outside during the summer — it’s the first patio to fill up! Popular items include Caribbean Crab Cakes (complete with panko crust and avocado puree), artisan pizza, and the Chipotle Chicken Crunch. The sandwich features quick fried crispy chicken breast, sweet chipotle aioli, charred corn and roasted red pepper salsa, and crispy onion rings on an artisan Kaiser bun. If you’re into craft beer, check out Pepperwood.
Outstanding wings await … these bad boys were crispy and meaty, accompanied by a nice house sauce with a little tangy goodness. This pub is bursting at the seams on wing night, when locals fill the place. Wings are dusted and tossed in one of many sauces (the yummy Palermo sauce is made in-house, and it’s really good). You also can’t go wrong with medium or Forty Creek BBQ. Palermo’s wings are well-done and just cooked to perfection. Order some already!
This rustic modern Tuscan farmhouse in Bronte Harbour is gorgeous, with a mix of marble tables, pendant lighting ,sconces and a retractable roof on the patio! (The heritage home is from 1843 … one look at the beautiful patio and I know where I’ll be parked all summer!) Created by the Mercanti family of Hamilton, the menu highlights sustainable seafood and classic italian spuntino (snacks or bites). Yolanda’s - home to coastal Italian fare - offers yummy eat. The grilled calamari was a delicious starter, while the gnocchi, made in-house, was incredible, featuring truffle cream. The charcuterie board comes with two cheese selections and salumi, alongside a delectable oil and balsamic reduction. The knotted bread is to die for! I could eat those everyday for the rest of my life. For dessert, the tiramisu was light and fresh, and reminiscent of pudding. Service is stellar. Run, don’t walk, to Yolanda’s and buy me a drink on the patio!
