It’s the perfect place to replenish after getting lost while hiking at Hilton Falls with your friend Jill (complete with a strapped in baby). This cute little Thai resto is a bonafide hidden gem in Halton (it’s also near a somewhat treacherous turn by the tracks but that’s neither here nor there). First time diner? Start with the mango salad, pad Thai, and a green curry. It’s not the sexiest place to head to but the place fills up, regardless. (And I think you know me well enough by now to realize I’m all about *taste* over fashion!). Speaking of which, flavours shine through and this is by far the best Thai meal in town.
This restaurant on Lakeshore will take you back into time … when owners come out of the back to chat with you, shake your hand, and thank you for visiting. The owner, Pasquale, does just that. The decor is simple but the food is divine. Opening in 2009, diners have been filling the place when they’re in the mood for authentic Italian fine-dining. They’re known for wholesome food (the pasta is wonderful!), delicious wine, and specialties from the heart of the Calogero family. The owner, Pasquale, creates all of the desserts himself and takes great pride in his work. He recommends the mascarpone, and you should definitely have some.
This Bronte Village restobar, south of Lakeshore Rd., absolutely blew me away with their pizza. The bread is freshly baked in-house and that salami … oh my. It just might be the best sliced meat I’ve ever tasted. This margherita pizza with spicy salami brought out my inner ninja turtle. Then there’s the Beef House Sliders, with bourbon bacon jam and vintage cheddar … Why does everything here taste so great? Catch Hospitality Group (which owns a slew of the best restos in Oakville, including this one) knocked this one out of the proverbial ballpark. This casual resto-bar has a farm-fresh focus and sources locally when possible. Good luck scoring a table on a Friday night … it’s worth the wait. The beer selection rocks, and so does the chill vibe. (My only gripe with the place is they’ve removed the phenomenal beet hummus from the menu. It’s been replaced with a pumpkin version but it’s not the same. Please bring it back!)
This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept burger secret. Just order The Burger and wait for it to arrive. Take in the glorious horseshoe-shaped bar and industrial light fixtures and wooden chairs with colourful legs. Try not to drool over the food or decor. Decked out between a bun with black-and-white sesame seeds you’ll find a thick grilled patty made in-house, like everything on the curated menu. It’s wrapped in prosciutto and drowned in melted Gorgonzola and served with frites and house-made ketchup, which tastes so healthy it feels as if I’m eating clean for just a split second. A few bites in, I had to put The Burger down and just nod at it to convey appreciation and respect. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Chase the Spaghetti Carbonara - featuring pasta made in-house, plus double-smoked bacon, garlic, arugula, and parmesan - with suds … they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer — nearly 100 varieties. Cheers!
Downtown Burlington’s food scene just got a boost, Italian-style. The Express Italian Eatery has opened along Lakeshore Rd. at Brant St. and it’s serving up pizza, pasta, steak and seafood. The new restaurant opened last month in the former Salvatore’s spot. It’s from Hamilton — there’s a location by McMaster University and another on Grays Rd. closer to Stoney Creek. Burlington is the third location. The Express is named after the train in Italy which weaved through Bolzano, Milano, Florence, Bologna, Rome, Calabria and Sicily. The menu represents a fusion of northern, central and southern Italian cuisine. What’s in store? Made to order wood fire pizzas, fresh in- house pasta and hand tossed gourmet salads. You’ll really want to get the Ravioli al Brasato di Manzo. Why? Pillows are stuffed with braised beef then topped with sauteed red onions and mushrooms. It’s comfort food that’s flavoured impeccably (and reminds me of my university roommate Tania’s pot roast … gone Italian). The Gnocchi, made in-house, arrives in a dreamy, creamy Rose sauce. It’s topped with fried sweet potato chips for a layer of texture. If you’re into sharing, you’ll want to order the Venetian pizza ($16). It’s got a thin crust plus asiago, soppressata, fresh rapini and pepperoncino, made in-house. It’s fantastic and perfectly crispy. Service is great, and here’s something special for the ladies: They give out blankets on the patio if you’re cold (or inside when the A/C is blasting.
