The gluttonous pizzaholic in me was outed at the mere sight of this pepperoni pie, finished with fresh basil and parmesan. Everything is made in-house at this cute downtown pizzeria on Pine St. Well, technically the meat and cheese are smoked outside, but you get the idea. One bite in, and you can taste so much flavour from the quality farm-to-table ingredients. The slightly burnt crust - from three-day cold fermented naturally leavened dough - was phenomenal. To wash it down, there’s sparkling wine on tap (they say they’re the first Burlington resto to offer this), plus hand-crafted local beer and wine. As far as atmosphere, it’s dimly lit and makes a great spot for a low-key first date … and regardless of how it goes, you’ll leave smelling divine. There’s no delivery, so you’ll have to come here to have Burlington’s best pizza. Complete with great service, the only word to describe this endearing gourmet pizzeria is fabulous!
Essentially everything on the menu at the Gingerman is fantastic, including their fries. These hand-cut Yukon gold fries are sprinkled with sea salt. They just hit the spot to the point where I could finish a massive platter of them for a solid, carb-filled, fatty meal. (Hopefully the cranky old guy who runs my gym doesn’t read this … or it will probably be death by burpee). Chase the spuds with a glass of their hand-picked wine selection if you fancy vino, or be cool like me and order a whisky sour.
This cute little pizzeria on Derry Rd. W. (next to the Hawthorne Cafe ) doesn’t look like much at first glance. The decor is simple, with wine on display. But the pizza is everything! A huge slice took several minutes to inhale and didn’t stop me from going back for more. The sauce tastes homemade because it is — everything is created in-house. With a great crust and flavourful cheese and meat in each bite, drizzling chilli oil (also prepared at Portabello’s) took it to an unbelievable level! The server was really friendly and helpful — she even reminded me to grab a cell phone charger on the way out. If that isn’t fabulous customer service, I’m not sure what is.
This Lakeshore Rd. restobar has an enviable view across from Spencer Smith Park, paired with a modern, upscale atmosphere. Their menu - created by Chef Zee - offers everything from calamari to chorizo sausage and shrimp puff pastry to Moroccan spiced duck breast. Table 34’s charcuterie board, or Mezza Plate, is superb. It features westphalian ham, Csabi sausage, provolone, gherkins, smoked almonds, grapes, cherry tomatoes, baba ghanouj, and bread. In other words, a perfect share platter!
The dress code is casual, however, the food is anything but. The Paradiso Burger tastes Incredible (hold up, grammar nerds — that’s an intentional capital ‘I’). Seasoned meat - a great combination of Angus beef and chorizo sausage - is unbelievably satisfying. The house-made patty is flavoured and tastes incredible as-is. One bite in, and I’m in burger paradise. This thick patty is topped with smoked cheddar, house-made ketchup and sweet pickles, smoked honey dijon mustard, then served with herb roasted mini red potatoes. Impressing Oakville diners for 20 years (there’s also a Burlington location on Pine St.) you’ve gotta make a reservation and get your burger on!
