1. Wild coyote attacks on local residents spurs City to action

A story that garnered national and international attention, wild coyotes were suddenly attacking people on walks, resting in the park or even a toddler in his own back yard.

Blamed on people feeding them, the City had to bring in experts to deal with the issue, including putting down a handful of the animals.


2. Monkeypox scare hits home in Halton

COVID-19 wasn’t the only significant public health scare Burlington residents dealt with during the year as monkeypox started circulating in our community.

The disease, usually non-fatal, is passed from person to person in close contact. Quick action by our health system, and awareness about how it’s transmitted, kept mpox from becoming a huge problem and the outbreak is almost over.


3. Burlington chosen as first Canadian home of US chain Duck Donuts

Everyone loves a great doughnut and our readers ate up our story about Duck Donuts open its first Canadian location in Burlington.

Duck Donuts, with its motto of Warm, Delicious and Made-to-Order!, opened at 5010 Pinedale Ave. in Appleby Village.


4. Burlington Beach has an amusing past

For more than 70 years, Burlington Beach was home to a full-fledged amusement park, with a Ferris wheel, rollercoaster and games of chance.

Development, and the QEW, eventually saw it go out of business and there are no remnants at the site, between Spencer Smith Park and the Burlington Skyway.


5. Big stars film flicks in Burlington

The movie industry continues to find Burlington a great place to film and Nicholas Cage and Michael Cera were among the Hollywood starts to find themselves in the city.

It was just last month that Cage and Cera, a Brampton native, were in town shooting a comedy-horror called Dream Scenario.
