5 Things to Do if You’re Broke in and Around Halton

Living on pennies? We all have to at some point.

Good thing is, a hole in your wallet needn’t be a reason to sit home all weekend.

You can go out for an art walk, bike through a trail and eat on a budget.

Here’s what all you can do.


5) Take an art tour

You don’t need a guide or an elaborate plan. Strap on comfortable shoes and head out to tour all the public art in your city. You’re never going to go if you have the money. So, why not go when you’re broke? Burlingotn has 84 public art works you could view, if you’re willing to hop around the city. Or hop inside Art Gallery of Burlington, which offers free admission on all exhibits. 

Those in Oakville, can visit the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, which has the Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada exhibit on till September 9. And, there’s a display of local artefacts and memorabilia from Oakville residents. Another option, is to visit Oakville art galleries at Centennial Square and Gairloch Gardens. Both have free admission! 
Folks in Milton, can visit Art-in-the-Park on August 12. The admission fee is a minimal $5 and you can view art pieces by several local artists from the GTA.  


4) Take a lesson in history

Find out what went down in golfing history in Canada for only $10 at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. If a sport’s history is not up your alley, visit the museum of Oakville for free. You can also visit two museums in Burlington – the Joseph Brant Museum and the Ireland House at Oakridge Farm. Pay $7 for both sites. Alternatively, visit the historic Sovereign House, part of the Bronte Historical Society, which is open to public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.


3) Attend a summer concert

Sounds like a big spend? You may not get to see your favourite band play when you’re broke, but you can catch some local talent with Concerts in the Park. Through June, July and August you can listen to jazz bands, swinging bands at the Central Park Bandshell in Burlington. Or head to Downtown Oakville for live music on Fridays in Towne Square.


2) Catch a free flick

Cuddle up with your S.O. under the stars and watch a movie under the stars. There are quite a few options, some of which include Summertime Movies on Thursday nights at Oakville’s Towne Square, classics like King Kong at Oakville Museum, the Movie under the stars series in Burlington.  It’s always fun!


1) Dine on a budget

Grab a good deal or hop into a cheap eatery. There’s no way you wouldn’t find something to eat for cheap. You can eat under $9 meals in Oakville. Most of the unique places to eat in Burlington are also budget-friendly. And, there’s a website you can search for deals. They update daily deals at restaurants across Burlington, so you know what you’ll get for the money in your pocket before you even head out.
