A Milton resident who was rescued following a swim at a Port Colborne beach and subsequently drowned in Lake Erie this afternoon has died in hospital.

On Monday (Sept. 4) at approximately 1:15 p.m., Niagara Regional Police along with emergency personnel responded to a possible drowning incident at Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores on Empire Rd.

According to police, the 50-year-old had gone swimming in Lake Erie and encountered distress in the water.

Despite the efforts of a bystander to assist, the man disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface, police say.

Investigators believe at the time of the incident Lake Erie was affected by increased wind and wave conditions.

Emergency services, including the NRPS Marine Unit, Port Colborne Fire Service, Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS), and the Port Colborne Marine Auxiliary Rescue (POCOMAR), were dispatched to the scene.

Additionally, a rescue helicopter from the Canadian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, which had been in Toronto for an air show, assisted in locating the man underwater.

Police say the man was recovered and found to be in critical condition. He was transported to shore by paramedics before being taken to a local hospital.

Unfortunately, despite resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives from the 3 District have been assigned to the investigation, and are being assisted by the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.

Investigators say foul play is not suspected.
