Over the next few years, pancake and shredded hashbrowns fans won’t have to go to Niagara Falls to get a taste of a popular American breakfast spot.

On Monday, the Toronto-based K2 Group of companies announced it will open at least five IHOP restaurants across southern Ontario, including one in Hamilton.

Other locations are in the works for Waterloo, London and Windsor.

A new location just opened its doors in Belleville, a city located on the north shore of the Bay of Quinte. According to a news release, the Canadian expansion is part of a non-traditional development agreement with Dine Brands International, a full-service dining company that franchises IHOP and Applebee’s restaurants in the country.

In a statement, Kailash Kasal, president of K2 Group, said he plans to open at least five IHOP restaurants over the next five years in Ontario.

The typical size for each restaurant will be between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet.

It’s not known when, exactly, IHOP will open a restaurant in Hamilton or where it will be located.

IHOP (also known as the International House of Pancakes) chain has 1,841 locations worldwide. More than 90 per cent of them are franchised and the rest are operated and owned by franchisees. It offers dinner and lunch items in addition to its signature breakfast foods.
