Now that it’s summer, and summer vacation for most students, more and more people will be spending their time outside and enjoying the nicer weather. And some Burlington residents may be excited to learn that a new skatepark is being constructed in the city this summer.

The skatepark will be located in north Burlington at Kilbride Park.

The skatepark was proposed back in 2016 by Kilbride Public School students.

“They talked [to council] about the benefits of establishing a skatepark in north Burlington,” reads the city’s website. “They pointed out that children in north Burlington have to travel outside of their community to participate in wheel sports; skateboarding, BMX and scooter riding. Having a skatepark in their own community means children in north Burlington will have more opportunities to improve their skills as riders.”

The website continues: “The skatepark would also be a local hub where all children can be active, connect and bond as a community. The student’s presentation led to the council’s decision to have staff investigate the cost and feasibility of constructing a medium size skate feature at either Lowville Park or Kilbride Park.”

Ultimately, back in 2017, Kilbride Park was approved as the preferred location for this project. And the budget for the project was approved as part of Burlington’s 2018 capital budget.

“In April 2018, the city undertook community consultation to find out what features the youth would like to see in the skatepark design,” notes the city’s website. “An interactive meeting was held with the students of Kilbride Public School and a general community meeting was also held.”

And in June of last year, the city released three design options for the skatepark and requested feedback from the public.

Ultimately, the third design option was selected as the preferred choice.

So, when will people be able to enjoy this skatepark?

Well, according to Peggy Lei, Landscape Architect, construction was expected to begin early in July and be completed later this summer or early in the fall.
