Alert issued due to ‘high levels of air pollution’ in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Halton

An air quality statement has been issued for high levels of air pollution resulting from the ongoing heatwave today (June 21).
The statement is in effect for:
- Mississauga
- Brampton
- Burlington
- Hamilton
- Oakville
- Milton
- Halton Hills
- Caledon
“Hot and sunny conditions have resulted in increasing ground-level ozone concentrations in the above regions. High risk AQHI values are expected to persist for 1 to 2 hours,” according to a statement from Environment Canada.
Some individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath.
Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
The higher pollution levels are expected to persist this afternoon through this evening.

A heat warning was issued on Monday (June 20) for high temperatures today and Wednesday, expected to reach the low to mid thirties.
Temperatures in the low twenties on Tuesday night and Wednesday night will provide little relief from the heat.
Cooler air is expected to arrive by Thursday.
