March is Fraud Prevention Month and Crime Stoppers of Halton is offering tips to residents of Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills on how to avoid becoming a victim.

“As our reliance on mobile devices grows, so does the prevalence of phone and text message scams in Halton Region,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

Here are some of the tips they suggest will help you avoid being defrauded:

  • Be skeptical of unknown calls and messages. Avoid answering calls or responding to messages from unfamiliar contacts.
  • Use caller ID on your phone to identify incoming calls. Utilize spam filters and blocking features to minimize unwanted calls and messages.
  • Never share sensitive personal information such as Social Insurance numbers or financial details over the phone or via text messages.
  • If someone claims to represent a company or organization, independently verify their identity.
  • Avoid responding to unsolicited text messages, especially those claiming you’ve won a prize or need to take urgent action.
