Be careful of the waterways this long weekend.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) warns all residents to avoid going near dams and hydro-stations this coming Victoria Day weekend. The combination of spring rain and snowmelt have caused water levels to rise and flow faster across many water systems in Ontario.

“For many Ontarians, Victoria Day marks the unofficial start of summer and the beginning of sports and recreation,” says Mike Martelli the OPG President of Renewable Generation.

“With the spring melt, most water systems across the province are experiencing higher water levels and faster flows, making them dangerous and unpredictable.”

In northeast parts of Ontario, snow surveys show that there will be higher and faster flows across many river systems. In Eastern Ontario, flows are above normal due to the wet spring weather that has been seen.

Most water conditions should return to normal in the coming days, but the public should keep in mind water levels can change quickly. OPG adjusts the flow of water through its dams to to better handle changing water conditions.

OPG hopes for people across Ontario to enjoy the Victoria Day weekend while remembering to stay clear and stay safe.

OPG operates 66 hydroelectric stations and 241 dams throughout 24 river systems across Ontario. They generate safe, clean, reliable power for Ontario for a low cost. More than 99% of the power is free of smog and carbon emissions.
