There’s nothing like the taste of warm, freshly baked bread and sweets – and nothing better than buying them locally near Halton!

Look no further than Bread and Salt Bakehouse, which opened this summer in Mississauga. With such an extensive menu, as well as a beautifully designed interior and comfortable seating, Bread and Salt is one café that’s worth a visit.

The menu at Bread and Salt Bakehouse features a selection of delicious breads, pastries, ice cream, Samboussek, and Manousheh – a popular Middle Eastern street food that is prepared in a variety of different ways, including as a wrap or in a pizza style.

The shop’s most popular item is the croissant, which are some of the best in the GTA. They come in a ton of different flavours including Chocolate, Double-baked Almond, and Za’atar.

If you’ve been stung in the past by other bakeries using less-than-fresh ingredients, have no fear; all of Bread and Salt’s products are made in house from scratch on a daily basis, and they use both local Canadian ingredients and high-quality ingredients from all over the world.

Their most popular pastries include Dark Chocolate and Pecan Cookies with Smoked Maldon Salt, Cream Scones with Seasonal Fruit, Valrhona Chocolate & Brown Butter Brownies, and Double-Baked Almond Croissants.

Located at 3455 Semenyk Court (just off of Central Parkway West), Bread and Salt Bakehouse is easy to miss but hard to forget. The bakery combines eastern and western flavours and culinary traditions, all wrapped up in a cozy, sit-down café experience.

The bakery’s bread selection includes artisanal bread, flatbread, and more. One of the Bakehouse’s most popular choices is their Country Style Sourdough, a blend of rye, whole wheat and bread flour, lightly sweetened with local honey, as well as their tender and fluffy Focaccia with seasonal toppings, which is packed with flavour.

“All of our breads freeze really well, and I recommend having them sliced to the thickness of your liking in-house, which makes it easy to take home, freeze, and consume as desired,” says Kira Desmond, Executive Pastry Chef and co-founder of Bread and Salt.

“This keeps the bread fresh and extends the shelf life.”

And of course, Bread and Salt’s Manousheh is a must-try, with the bakery recently launching a new menu that uses Manousheh dough in various formats.

Choose from the Flat Manousheh (described as Middle Eastern flatbread or pizza), Manousheh Wrap, and Samboussek (comparable to an elevated Pizza Pocket, or Panzerotti.) You can also choose from several chef-driven flavour combinations, or even build your own from the bakery’s extensive selection of freshly prepared toppings.

Whatever you’re having, wash it down with a drink – the Bakehouse offers hot drinks such as Sloane Tea and freshly brewed coffee from local Mississauga company Barocco.

If that isn’t enough to whet your palate, Bread and Salt also makes a variety of specialty Syrian-style chewy ice cream which can be dressed up into a sundae or turned into an ice cream sandwich – panini-style.

The bakery also prepares unique seasonal items year-round. This Thanksgiving, they plan to create a sweet potato brioche using Organic Emerald Grasslands Butter.

While Bread and Salt’s menu has something for everyone, you may not know that the bakery also houses a retail shop selling imported goods from around the world, such as chocolates, olive oil, black garlic, jams, and specialty dates.

You can’t forget about their pita bread – it’s the bakery’s foundation and what they first started making. It’s made from a traditional family recipe and is available in a variety of flavours, including the recently added Olive Tapenade and Za’atar.

The bakery was founded by a small group of family and friends living in Mississauga who wanted to share their passion for high-quality food inspired by worldly flavours.

“The meaning behind Bread and Salt is forged in the tradition of sharing bread and salt among family and friends, which is a common tradition in many cultures around the world,” Executive Pastry Chef, Kira Desmond explains.

The bakery is open every weekday from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it the perfect place to enjoy your breakfast or grab some lunch.
