In a press conference today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a new change for travellers which is meant to crackdown on the spread of COVID-19.

Starting Monday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m., anyone showing any signs of COVID-19 will be denied boarding on all domestic flights and intercity passenger trains, Trudeau reports.

Despite these new travel guidelines, buses and coaches travelling between provinces will not be affected, and the prime minister says there are no plans at this time to close provincial borders.

“Some industries are not under federal jurisdiction but we do recommend and in fact we are putting rules in place to make sure people do not take any trips anywhere if they have COVID-19 symptoms,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau is encouraging residents to continue practicing social distancing and to stay home unless travel is absolutely essential. He also expressed his sympathy to the youth population affected by this pandemic.

“They’re looking at their plans for the spring and their summer jobs, and they’re realizing that there’s a massive anxiety and a massive uncertainty out there,” he said.

“But that doesn’t mean they’re powerless. On the contrary, this generation of young people is so committed and engaged to creating a better world that we need you to keep leading the way you are.”

Trudeau also mentioned again that the government will be providing financial assistance to residents with the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which will provide $2000 a month over four months for workers impacted by the pandemic.

The government plans to open the application process for this benefit in early April.
