Burlington fire chief backs province-wide smoke alarm campaign

The Burlington Fire Department is encouraging all residents to take part in a province-wide smoke alarm campaign.

Called “Saved by the Beep” the purpose of the campaign is to make sure that your smoke alarm works properly by testing it.

The date set for the campaign is Sept. 28.

According to the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal, in 2022 there were 133 people killed in the province due to fire, the highest number in over 20 years. Many of these fires were found to have no working smoke alarm.

“Don’t underestimate the importance of a working smoke alarm,” said Karen Roche, Burlington Fire Chief. “Only working smoke alarms will alert you to a fire and give you and your loved ones enough time to escape. Recognizing Sept. 28 as Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is a great reminder to set aside time to focus on household safety and emergency planning.”

While taking time out on Sept. 28 to test the smoke alarm is part of the campaign, the Burlington Fire Department recommends testing at least once a month and that batteries be replaced once a year.
