Burlington looking for people to sit on city’s Committee of Adjustment

If you’ve ever had a yearning to sit on a committee that adjusts things, the City of Burlington has the perfect opportunity.

The city is currently recruiting new members for the Committee of Adjustment, an independent body tasked with making important land-use matters in the community.

“Participating at the Committee of Adjustment is a unique opportunity to shape how our neighbourhoods grow and develop at a local level,” said city clerk Kevin Arjoon.

“Through your experience, you will gain a foundation on land use planning, and a broader understanding of how municipal government works.”

There are three people being sought, one full-time member and two alternates.

The COA, made up of five members and two alternates, is authorized by Ontario’s Planning Act to consider and makes decisions on applications for:

  • Minor variances from the provisions of a zoning bylaw
  • Changes to land configuration by way of a consent to “sever” a property, or for any agreement, mortgage or lease that extends for more than 21 years
  • Permission, which deals with the enlargement or extension of a building or structure that is legally non-conforming, or a change in non-conforming use
  • Validation of title and power of sale.

Meetings of the COA take place virtually, on a bi-weekly basis, on Wednesdays, alternating each week between afternoons beginning at 1 p.m. and evenings beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Members receive $80 per meeting.

COA member appointments expire on Nov. 14, 2022, or until a successor is appointed. Appointments are customarily four years to coincide with the term of City Council.

Some of the qualifications for the position include:

  • A strong background in planning, engineering, architecture, law, or a suitable equivalent
  • The ability to read and understand the City’s Zoning Bylaw and Official Plan
  • An ability to read, review and, at times, analyze development plans, site plans, architectural plans, grading plans
  • Familiarity with iPad and virtual meeting technology
  • Training in, or familiarity with, Robert’s Rules of Order, is an asset
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license in order to perform site visits.
