The mayor of Burlington says it was “shocking news” to learn that a now former City employee is facing child pornography charges.

In a statement issued today (June 26), Mayor Marianne Meed Ward acknowledged the situation saying it is a difficult time for the City.

“Our Burlington community is reeling over the shocking news of a Halton Regional Police Service investigation and charges against a former City employee with the Teen Tour Band,” she said in the statement released late in the day. “I, along with my Council colleagues and City staff, know this is very difficult and stand by and with you,”

The person charged worked for the City as an instructor with the Burlington Teen Tour Band (BTTB). He is no longer employed by the organization.

The mayor went on to say the BTTB has been a beloved part of the Burlington family for more than 75 years.

She said the police investigation into this case does not change the current relationship with the City and the band.

“We have travelled with you, seen you perform – both at home and abroad. We are proud of what generations of our youth have been able to accomplish as our global and local ambassadors. We continue to be proud,” she said.

She encouraged Burlington residents to reach out to anyone they may know in the band and offer support and compassion.

“The safety of our staff, band members and community are paramount and our top priority,” the statement continued. “We are offering our full support to the members of our BTTB. If you or someone you know needs support, there are several community resources out there to help, available here: community resources for mental health support.”

Last week Halton Regional Police charged Matthew Wicks, 29, of Burlington with two counts of possession of child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography.

The arrest came as a result of an investigation by the department’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit into a person sharing child sexual abuse material online.

As well as being the head percussion instructor with the BTTB, Wicks had also been a partial faculty member at Mohawk College.
