Students will get a crack at on-the-job experience with new funding for the Ford Motor plant in Oakville.

As part of a general training program announced by the Provincial government yesterday, Ford will receive almost $1 million to create up to 244 co-op learning spots to give to college and university students practical and hands-on experience for careers in manufacturing, vehicle connectivity and business options.

The funds are part of a larger $37 million package for similar training throughout the province announced by Premier Doug Ford during stops in Burlington and Hamilton.

The goal of the program is train more than 15,000 people province-wide locations so that they can gain skills in jobs such as those in the information technology, advanced manufacturing, truck driving, construction and horticultural.

The internships at the Oakville plant will be for various lengths of time. No start date for the program has been announced.

“As part of our government’s made-in-Ontario plan for growth, renewal and economic recovery, we are making multi-billion-dollar infrastructure investments in transit, highway, and broadband projects,” said Premier Ford. “To get the job done, we need to train as many electricians, welders, carpenters, and other skilled workers as we can. Today’s investment will ensure we have the right people rebuilding our province and contributing to our long-term success.”
