Due to the heavy overnight rain, Conservation Halton has issued a flood outlook for the region.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated, fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas and natural floodplains may be expected, says the environmental agency.

Additionally, heavy downpours associated with thunderstorms could result in flooding of highly urbanized areas.

“Antecedent soil conditions within the watershed were very dry, but the long duration and low intensity of the rainfall overnight will have partially saturated the ground,” says Conservation Halton.

“The combination of increased flows and water levels and slippery and unstable banks will create hazardous conditions close to any rivers, streams, or other water bodies.”

Residents and children are asked to keep a safe distance from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams due to potentially dangerous conditions.

The flood outlook is in effect through Tuesday, August 4, and Conservation Halton says it will continue to monitor stream flow and weather conditions.
