Cyclist runs red light, almost gets hit, cops in Burlington see it all

A cyclist who ignored a red light and drove through an intersection narrowly avoided serious injury, according to Halton Regional Police who captured the incident on video.

Police say it occurred around 6:30 p.m. last night (Aug. 22) in the Brant St. and Fairview St. area.

Officers who watched events unfold said when the cyclist ran the red light an oncoming SUV driver, who had the right of way, slammed on their brakes to avoid a collision.

Police say the incident was captured on the police cruiser dashcam. That video has not been released.

As a result, police warned cyclists that the rules of the road also apply to them.

“The law isn’t optional. Cyclists increase your safety,” police said in a statement on a social media account. They added a few more tips. “Ditch the headphones, (have) lights front and back (both) day and night.

The unnamed cyclist was issued a $325 fine for not obeying the traffic signals. The name of the cyclist has not been released.
