Following complaints from Niagara politicians and an intervention by Premier Doug Ford, the construction schedule for the Burlington Skyway has been changed once more.

Earlier this week both Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati and MPP Wayne Gates contacted the premier’s office to complain that the Friday night and Saturday morning lane closures for Niagara-bound traffic along the QEW bridge were hurting tourism at the Falls.

“While I appreciate the investment in improving Ontario’s highway infrastructure,” Gates said in a letter to Ford, “the repairs on the Burlington Skyway Bridge, resulting in traffic closures on Friday evenings, are occurring during the absolute busiest times of year for the tourist industry in Niagara, and one of the busiest travel times and routes for in-province travel.”

In his conversations with business leaders, Gates said they complained about Friday night hotel reservations being cancelled which has a trickle-down effect on restaurants and other tourism benefactors.

Diodati echoed those concerns saying the lane closures were ill-timed coming at the height of the tourism season.

Compounding the problem is that the other route, the Canal Lift Bridge on Eastport Dr. also has lane closures, so drivers are having difficulty getting through the area.

Speaking in Lincoln on Tuesday, Ford acknowledged the problem and later contacted the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to suggest a change. Today. (July 19) a new construction schedule was released for the Niagara-bound lanes:

Saturday, July 22
8:30 p.m. – one lane closed
10 p.m. – full closure
Sunday, July 23, 11:30 a.m. – all lanes reopen

Friday, July 28*
8:30 p.m. – one lane closed
10 p.m. – full closure
Saturday, July 29, 10 a.m. – all lanes reopen
*rain date – Saturday, July 29

Friday, Aug. 11*
8:30 p.m. – one lane closed
10 p.m. – full closure
Saturday, Aug. 12, 10 a.m. – all lanes reopen
*rain date – Saturday, Aug. 12

Friday, Aug. 18*
8:30 p.m. – one lane closed
10 p.m. – full closure
Saturday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. – all lanes reopen
*rain date – Saturday, Aug. 19

During these times, QEW Niagara-bound ramps will be closed at Northshore Blvd., Plains Rd. and Fairview St.

The MTO says the lane closures are necessary to make repairs on the aging bridge.
