Downtown Oakville mochi donut shop just chewy goodness
Some sugary sweet goodness is coming to downtown Oakville this summer.
The Mochi Girls donut shop is opening soon at 335 Lakeshore Rd. E.
After hosting several popular pop ups at various locations, the Mochi girls have a new store to call their own and sell the popular Japanese style donuts.
“Thank you to everyone who supported our pop ups @snowiesbingsu and now we can’t wait to have our own space,” said a post by the girls on Instagram. “Tell all your donut lovers out there.”
Crispy and fresh with the chewiness of mochi on the inside, the bubble-ring shaped donuts by Mister Donut became popular in Japan and are also known at “pon de ring.”
Mochi donuts have a deep-fried crust and a mochi-like texture on the inside. They are different from regular donuts in both texture and taste.
While regular donuts, made with all-purpose flower, are denser and bread-like, the texture of mochi donuts is chewy and light, making them much easier to eat.
Mochi is a type of rice cake made of short-grain glutinous rice, sugar, water, and cornstarch. After the rice is cooked, it’s pounded into a sticky paste and formed into different shapes.
This process was thought to have originated in Ancient China and eventually introduced to Japan.
The donuts are drizzled with all sorts of tasty flavours. There’s peach, strawberry, raspberry, durian, mango, watermelon, chocolate strawberry, vanilla and much more.
The Mochi girls have already developed a following thanks to their pop ups.
“OMG, so excited!!!, said an Instagram follower. “Best mochi donuts ever.”
