An overweight truck pulled over Friday morning (Aug. 11) in Oakville is getting a bit of a break and the driver and company are facing multiple charges.

Halton Regional Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Constable Shane Barnes noticed the dump truck on the road and after inspecting the vehicle discovered multiple issues.

The truck, which appeared to be carrying a large load of rocks and dirt, was overweight by several measures:

  • Permit – 8100kg
  • Gross vehicle weight rating – 3,755kg
  • Single axle – 2,929kg
  • Tires – 1,250kg

The truck also had no pre-trip inspection report.

“Heavier vehicles cause increased damage to roads,” Halton Regional Police said on social media. “Overloading vehicles past the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) causes increased strain on the vehicle components and a significant risk if those components fail on the road.

“Overloading tires can cause a tire to blow out.”

The truck has been placed out of service and the driver and company are facing multiple charges, said police.
