Drivers baffled over confusing lane closures on Burlington Skyway

They did it again.

A day after announcing that Niagara-bound lanes will be closed this Saturday night (Aug. 19), the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) now says there will be no driving restrictions across the Burlington Skyway this weekend.

This follows a summer-long shift of cancellations, date changes, complaints, and politicking as the MTO works to make repairs on the aging bridge across Hamilton Harbour.

“It’s open. It’s closed. It’s open. It’s closed. It cancelled. No, it’s not. Yes, it is. Isn’t anybody in charge of this project?” wrote Randy Azar on social media this afternoon. “They must realize this is confusing for motorists. So many people rely on the bridge and nobody seems to care.”

The sentiments were echoed by users both on Twitter and Facebook who said the constant interruptions have affected vacation plans, truckers and those heading home from work.

“Come on! Yesterday you said the bridge was closed, now you say it will be open. I mean, I’m glad it’s open but get your act together. We constantly have to change our plans,” said a Twitter user directing comments at the MTO.

The MTO could not be reached for comment.

The construction on the QEW bridge has been fraught with problems from the beginning with initial closures coinciding with rush hour traffic and those heading for a respite at Niagara Falls.

Politicians from Niagara have publicly complained about the arbitrary closures and even Ontario Premier Doug Ford stepped into the fray to convince construction crews to change their work hours away from peak driving times.

Compounding the problem is the continuing overhaul of the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge which has led to slowdowns through the same area on Eastport Dr. The lift bridge repair work is a federal government project.

As of now, the next scheduled closing of the Niagara-bound lanes across the bridge are:

  • Saturday, Aug. 26
  • Friday, Sept. 8 with Sept. 9 as backup
  • Friday, Sept. 15 with Sept. 16 as backup
