As people return to work, travel on the GO Train hasn’t returned to normal and riders shouldn’t expect a return of express trains anytime soon.

GO Transit’s Lakeshore West line, which runs from Union Station to Hamilton, used to run express trains for speedier service into the city. But when the pandemic started and ridership took a nose dive, Metrolinx stopped the express service.

And now, more than two years later, the service still hasn’t returned to normal.

“While trains are getting busier, overall ridership is about 47 per cent of pre-pandemic levels,” Metrolinx reported on their blog.

For this reason, the GO Train express trains have not returned to the schedule.

“…scheduled express trips don’t make the best use of the trains and crews available,” Metrolinx notes.

As people started to work from home during the pandemic, transit suffered. Although many restrictions have been lifted, the work-from-home trend continues with many people choosing to go to the office less often.

GO Transit has gradually increased service but hasn’t added express trains on the Lakeshore West, Lakeshore East and Kitchener Lines.

The express trains will return when ridership levels return to normal levels.

“Metrolinx will continue to monitor ridership closely and will ramp up service in phases, including the eventual reintroduction of express trips.”
