Jayne Hounslow died tragically at Burlington Central School after being struck by a vehicle.

The young girl killed in a hit-and-run outside of Burlington Central Public School has been identified.

Eight-year-old Jayne Hounslow died following the incident Wednesday night while being dropped off at the school around 5:30 p.m.

Jayne was crossing the school’s driveway when she was struck by a vehicle that was leaving the parking area. Her parents were dropping off so that she could attend an event at the school.

Last night her family released her photo and Halton Regional Police have confirmed her identity.

A 21-year-old Burlington man was subsequently arrested a short time later at his home and charged with failing to remain after an accident.

Police are still investigating the incident and appealing to witnesses to help with their investigation.

At this point, the name of the person charged has not been released.

A Halton police communications officer said no further information on any additional charges against the driver have been filed at this time. They said that if his identity is made available a media release will be issued with that updated information.

However, other officials that spoke to inhalton.com indicated the decision to release the identity of the person could depend on whether police are concerned about his safety.

“Police and others have to take that into consideration because of the nature of this case,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Jayne has been described by those who know her as determined and an eager participant in activities including tae-kwon-do classes which she has been taking for several years.

The Halton District School Board has sent grief counsellors to the school to help both students and teachers to cope with the tragedy.
