First day of summer revives memories of Ella Fitzgerald in Burlington

Today, June 21, is the first day of summer and what better way to usher it in than with the “First Lady of Song.”

Jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald famously was one of the big names who appeared in Burlington at the Brant Inn along with other legendary performers during its heydays of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

The renowned hotel, located near where Joseph Brant Hospital now stands, attracted patrons from across Ontario and upstate New York to not only see Fitzgerald but acts such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Andy Williams and Johnny Mathis.

According to the Museums of Burlington, Fitzgerald performed at the Brant Inn on June 4, 1947, and while the version of Summertime presented here is not from her local appearance, it does capture the atmosphere and swing style of the time, not to mention the spirit of the changing seasons.

Enjoy the summer!
