Ford employees in Oakville will be assembling a new vehicle – the Edge ST – for export, the company announced this week.

Ford Motor Company of Canada is making its first major investment locally after a four-year, $1.2 billion deal was finalized during 2016 contract negotiations with Unifor.

The new Ford Edge and all-new Edge ST are due to arrive in showrooms this summer.

Roughly 100 countries will be on the receiving end of the SUV in 2019.

The Edge also recently delivered its best November on record with a 12 per cent increase, the company said.

There are roughly 4,600 Oakville assembly workers who build the Lincoln MKX, Lincoln MKT, and Ford Flex in addition to the Edge.

The plant opened in 1953.
