GoFundMe set up after 11 year old boy pronounced dead in Milton
Funds are being raised as the community deals with the recent loss of a young child in Milton.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, emergency crews were called to an area near Reece Court, where two boys had ventured onto the thin ice on a nearby storm management pond and fallen through.
One boy was able to remove himself from the pond and, after trying to help the other boy, ran to a neighbouring home to call for help.
Upon arrival, officers and members of Milton Fire, Halton Police Marine Unit and Halton Paramedics started a search for the boy who was still in the water.
He was located 15 minutes later and life-saving measures were initiated, police said. The boy was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he died a short time later.
“The Halton Regional Police Service are deeply saddened to report the 11-year-old boy rescued from the storm management pond in Milton has succumbed to his injuries,” police said.
“The child passed away at Milton District Hospital shortly after 4 p.m. despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders and Milton District Hospital Emergency Medical Unit.”
Following the incident, a GoFundMe page was set up by Milton resident Ayse Ucgec, the father of the boy who was at the pond with the now deceased 11 year old boy.
“They saw a thick piece of ice that they assumed was safe to play on. When his friend fell through the ice he jumped in to try to save him but he couldn’t get a hold of him. He swam out of the pond to look for help,” said Ucgec, who has asked community members to donate what they can to help the boy’s family with funeral-related and other costs.
“He was such an amazing friend to my son and so many other children in our community. He will be missed so deeply.”
As of 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, the GoFundMe has raised over $28,000 from at least 680 donors — more than doubling its goal of $10,000.
Police say the family is requesting privacy at this time.
