It appears a one-day strike is in the forecast for Ontario high school students.

It appears a one-day strike is in the forecast for Ontario high school students.

After the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) and the government failed to reach an agreement by midnight on December 4, the Twitter account for the OSSTF confirmed high school teachers will be participating in a one-day walkout Wednesday, December 4.

Classes will resume on December 5.

In response to the potential strike, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, said in a news release: “My message to parents, on the eve of potential job action, is that our Government has remained reasonable at the negotiating table, with the objective of keeping students in class.”

He adds: “It has been over 200 days since we first started bargaining with OSSTF and in that time, they have not made any substantive moves since their first proposal was tabled. Even while the Government made enhanced offers, there is no indication OSSTF intends to make any moves, except to affirm their insistence on a $1.5 billion increase in pay and benefits.”

Lecce urged the OSSTF members to “be reasonable” and consider how this will impact the families involved–both parents and students.
