Halton Hills and Oakville closing all outdoor recreational facilities

The Towns of Oakville and Halton Hills will be closing all outdoor recreational facilities to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The Towns of Oakville and Halton Hills will be closing all outdoor recreational facilities to help prevent the spread of the virus.

In compliance with the Province’s order that all outdoor recreational facilities close to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Halton Hills will be closing all playgrounds, sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, off-leash dog parks, beaches, skateboard parks, picnic areas, outdoor community gardens, park shelters, outdoor exercise equipment, condo parks and gardens.

Additionally, while Oakville has ordered the closure of all outdoor recreational facilities as well, many residents have been ignoring the Town’s instruction, and have even removed and vandalized barriers in order to access facilities.

As a result, the Province has announced it will begin issuing fines of $750 to citizens who fail to adhere to the emergency order, which includes those who gather in areas such as:

  • playgrounds and play structures
  • sports fields, such as soccer and baseball diamonds
  • skateboard parks
  • basketball courts
  • tennis courts
  • community gardens
  • outdoor picnic sites and shelters
  • beaches
  • off-leash dog areas

“To all residents, the town is here for you but we need your help if we are going to stop the spread and save lives,” Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said in a news release.

“This is a serious issue. Everyone needs to do their part, to take care of themselves and think about others. Stay home, stop getting together with friends in local parks. They are closed for a reason – to keep you safe. Together, we will get through this,” Burton continued.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation in obeying the park closure signs and respecting the safety tape that has been placed to protect public safety”, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette said in a different news release.

“Let’s continue to work together and do our part to stop COVID-19 by staying home, practising physical distancing, and avoiding social gatherings,” Bonnette continued.
