A Halton police officer was dragged for about 50 metres during an attempted vehicle theft in Milton last week.

Halton police said officers were called to the area of Woodward Ave. and Thompson Rd. N. at around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, after reports of people attempting to steal a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

When they arrived, several suspects fled on foot. While attempting to a man in the suspect vehicle, police said an officer was dragged before falling to the ground, suffering minor injuries.

The driver of the suspect vehicle escaped. However, after continued investigation, a suspect who fled on foot was located and arrested in the back yard of a neighbouring residence.

Takiyoudine Oumerzouk, 23, of Montreal was arrested and has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, obstructing a peace officer, and failure to comply with a release order.

At the time of his arrest, Oumerzouk was on a release order with conditions not to leave Quebec. Oumerzouk was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

Further suspects remain outstanding and anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the 1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext. 2416.
