Tuesday morning, Halton Police Service took to Twitter to issue a warning to residents regarding a reported scam.

“We have been receiving reports of citizens getting calls from persons claiming to representatives of hydro companies demanding payment of Bitcoin or gift cards to avoid cancellation of services,” tweeted Halton police at 8:56 A.M. “Please be reminded that hydro companies will not request payments in this manner”

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency without a central bank or single administrator that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries.

Scammers have frequently targeted the region under the guise of a hydro worker.
