Halton police are warning residents of spoofing as fraudulent calls are being made from their non-emergency telephone number.

At least three incidents were reported on April 6 — in one case the caller purported to be “police.”
The number which shows up on your caller ID is 905-825-4777.
Referred to as spoofing, a caller on Canadian telephone systems can easily make a call appear from any number. Fraudsters will do this in order to hide the true origin of the call, say investigators.

But outgoing calls from HRPS landlines will never be displayed as 905-825-4777, say police.
“This spoofing activity does not represent a data breach, nor does it represent a records information breach,” reads a news release from police.
“Any and all personal information on file with our service is secure, and the protection of this information remains our highest priority.”
The IT unit has begun an investigation into this spoofing activity and is using internal and external resources, say police.
In addition, the fraud intake unit is working closely with cyber crime investigators to gather forensic information.
In the meantime, don’t provide information to anyone contacting you from 905-825-4777, say police.
