Halton Region is receiving $685,000 from the provincial government to help asylum claimants in Burlington, Milton, Oakville and Halton Hills.

Ontario is working with impacted municipalities across the province to provide urgent assistance to a rapidly-growing number of asylum claimants and other at-risk populations. The province is investing an additional $42 million through the Canada Ontario Housing Benefit (COHB) in 2023-24.

“Halton Region is thankful to the Province for this funding in support of newcomers and at-risk populations,” said a Halton Region spokesperson.

“The Canada Ontario Housing Benefit is an important program and we look forward to using this funding to support newcomer populations and other vulnerable demographics currently experiencing homelessness in Halton region. Ongoing funding is critical to continue our work to support those who need it most in our community.”

The funding allocations reflect the estimated share of asylum claimants in each area and their relative impact on local services, based on provincial social assistance data.
