Hamilton double-murder suspect was heavily armed, police say

The Hamilton man who died in a shootout with police was armed with several weapons, according to reports.
The 57-year-old man was killed late last night (May 27) following an exchange of gunfire with a police officer. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
Police initially were dispatched to 322 Jones Rd. in Stoney Creek at 5:40 p.m. after reports of a landlord-tenant dispute.
When officers arrived they found a man and a woman had been shot. Paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.
Witnesses said that the couple, who lived in a basement apartment in the house, were gunned down while trying to flee the home. The man killed in the gunfight with police was the homeowner who lived upstairs.
Police now confirm the man had several registered weapons in his possession, including handguns and rifles as well as ammunition.

During a standoff that lasted several hours, the suspect barricaded himself inside the house and fired at officers several times. The gunplay had police warning neighbours to stay indoors and to hide in their basements.
Because of the police involvement in the suspect’s death, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now on the scene. The SIU has confirmed that there was an exchange of gunfire between the man and a police officer.
The names of the two tenants who were killed by the gunman have not been released. However, police say the couple were engaged to be married and not involved in any criminality.
The 27-year-old female victim was an educational assistant at the Catholic school board in Brant County, and the 28-year-old male victim was an electrician.
“These are not people that this should happen to,” Sgt. Steve Bereziuk told reporters at a press conference.
According to police, the dispute was not about a missed rental payment but more about the state of repairs needed at the house.
