May is recognized as South Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and with it comes the opportunity to appreciate and showcase the contributions made to Canadian society from such cultures as those that originate in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

One such event that showcases the South Asian community is back in Hamilton, allowing attendees to celebrate and immerse themselves in the diversity the community offers.

Set to take place on May 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at  Westdale Secondary School at 700 Main St W, Hamilton, the 19th Annual Spring Festival of South Asia, is expected to be an evening filled with music, dance, food, and cultural experiences, according to organizers.

The highlight of the evening will be the performances showcasing traditional music and dance forms from the lively beats of Bhangra (folk dance of Punjab) to the graceful movements of  Indian classical dance.

Like most festivals, this one will have an array of food stalls featuring everything from spicy curries to sweet desserts.

“It’s a chance to learn, engage, and create lasting memories while embracing the beauty of South Asian heritage,” said Khursheed Ahmed, President of the South Asian Heritage Association of Hamilton Region (SAHAHR)

In the spirit of giving back to the community, all non-perishable food items from the event will be donated to the local food bank.

While the festival offers free admission, the South Asian Heritage Association (SAHAHR) requests donations to support their mission of promoting and preserving the diverse traditions of South Asia in the city.

“We have always kept our Spring Festival free of charge to the audience so everyone can attend. However, as you can imagine the cost of organizing the annual event amounts to about $10,000 (for) hall rental, artist fees, costumes, travel, publicity, etc,” Ahmed said.

“It only costs $10 per person (14 years and older), so kindly send your family membership fee to us. If possible, please add a donation to help us reach our goal of $7000,” he added.
