On March 30, 2019, Halton Police caught a driver watching a video on their phone – a Leafs game to be exact – in Oakville.

This incident occurred at Dundas Street and Meadowridge Drive.

As a result, the driver received a provincial offence notice for distracted driving.
If settled out in court, this incident could result in the driver being fined for $615, in addition to gaining three demerit points, and facing a three-day suspension.

The penalty, according to Halton Police, can escalate as high as s $3,000 fine, six demerit points, and a 30-day license suspension for repeat offenders.
It is noted on the government of Canada website that demerit points stay on a driver’s record for two years from the offence date.
Halton Police are now reminding drivers that it is illegal to have a display screen of any type that is visible to the driver, even if they claim they are not watching it, as is displaying videos of any kind while the vehicle is on a roadway.
