A new community centre is expected to open in Oakville in the fall of 2020.

Here’s what we currently know about it so far:

According to a recent press release, the Southeast Community Centre (SECC) will be located on the site of the former Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

The town of Oakville announced on Sept. 26 that the town officially broke ground on the SECC site.

This officially kicked off the construction phase.

“This milestone marks a significant step forward in redevelopment plans for the former hospital site,” Mayor Rob Burton said in a recent press release.

“We’re excited to build a new community hub that will bring people together and help residents live active, engaged and healthy lifestyles.”

The centre will have a modern building design while still respecting the adjacent heritage district and the designated high school.

The new SECC will feature a 25-metre lap pool, a warm water pool, a double gymnasium, a fitness centre with a running track, multipurpose meeting rooms and space for intergenerational programming.

The community centre will also include a LEED-certified energy efficient building that will include rooftop solar panels, geo-thermal cooling and heating, a car charging station, and a battery energy storage system.

The town of Oakville is partnering with Oakville Hydro to have this built.

The park that will neighbour the centre will feature soft landscaping and trees, a play structure, seating, lawn areas, a water play area, pavilion and bicycle parking.
