We’ve said it once before, and we’ll say it again. It’s not uncommon for many people to get active and get outside once the warmer weather arrives. And for many people, a common outdoor activity is biking.

And avid cyclists in Halton may be happy to learn, or may already know, that Bike Month 2019 recently kicked off.

Bike Month 2019 began on May 27 and will wrap up on June 30.

And as part of the kick-off to bike month this year, the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) was recognized as a certified bicycle-friendly business area.

As a result, the BDBA has received its ‘Ontario By Bike (OBB) Business Area’ certification.

Currently, there are six other municipalities in Ontario that have received the same certification.

And, according to a recent press release, other downtown businesses in Burlington that have received an OBB bike-friendly certification include: The Art Gallery of Burlington, Emma’s Back Porch, Lola Choco Bar & Sweet House, Lettuce Love Café and The Waterfront Hotel.

However, the goal is for this list to keep growing.

“As more people choose alternative transportation to explore the best of Burlington, our small business community has taken extra steps to offer amenities and services that are specific to the needs of residential and visiting cyclists,” Brian Dean, Executive Director of the BDBA, said in a statement. “We have worked closely with a select number of downtown businesses who have helped us achieve this certification, and we look forward to growing the list of downtown businesses participating in the Ontario By Bike program in the coming months.”

The BDBA is a not-for-profit organization that represents more than 430 commercial property owners and businesses within the Business Improvement Area. And Tourism Burlington is one of the BDBA’s community partners that worked to help the association achieve its certification.

“Tourism Burlington is thrilled that the BDBA has received an Ontario by Bike cycle friendly designation and we are pleased to be designated as the official Bike Welcome Centre,” Pam Belgrade, Executive Director, Tourism Burlington, said in a statement. “At our downtown visitor information centre, we greet and provide information and support to numerous cycle tourists annually.”

Belgrade noted that these visitors will now have more cycle-friendly shops, restaurants, and accommodations to explore in Burlington.
