Is Milton Transit Ridership Up?
Town council received a Milton Transit report with key performance indicators for the first quarter of 2018 on June 18.
A 5 per cent increase in ridership, compared to the first quarter of last year.
In addition, revenue passenger trips grew by 6 per cent during the same time period.
Transit growth continues to be influenced by local economic and residential growth, service enhancements and service reliability improvements made in 2017, according to the town.
Ridership in the first quarter of 2018 grew by over 7,100 boardings compared to the same time period of last year, achieving over 140,200 boards in the first quarter.
Milton Transit’s specialized transit program Milton access+ increased by 7 per cent compared to the first quarter of the previous year, as a result of trip growth and expanded eligibility requirements.
This significant ridership growth is expected to continue and be complemented by additional service enhancements planned for September of this year.
New developments for this year include an update for the Transit Master Plan, covering 2019 - 2023 and a facility feasibility study to define requirements for a dedicated transit garage for bus storage and maintenance.
In addition, on-board technology advancements will continue to be launched, including real-time bus arrival/departure information and automated passenger counting systems.
To promote even greater access to Milton Transit, bus shelters and accessible bus pads will be installed at a number of current and new bus stop locations.
The new Milton Transit brand will continue to roll out on buses, signs and publications.
Milton council also approved a one-year contract extension until July 2020 for PW Transit, the contracted service provider, who employs bus operators and maintains the Milton Transit fleet.
