Major Police Blitz Kicks Off Today

Police are working to keep unsafe transport trucks off the roads.

According to police, the annual Halton Police Truck Inspection Blitz kicks off today (Oct. 3).

According to a recent press release, this event is put on by the Halton Regional Police in partnership with other police and law enforcement agencies.

It is a two-day commercial motor vehicle inspection and enforcement blitz.

During the event enforcement officers will be stationed across the Halton Region, which includes the 400 series highways, looking for commercial vehicles that appear to be lacking in mechanical fitness or display a load or safety concern.

Lacking vehicles will be subjected to a traffic stop and escorted to the inspection site at Mohawk under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act.

The inspection site will be located at the Mohawk Racetrack on Guelph Line in Milton, 9430 Guelph Line (Highway 401 and Guelph Line).

The annual initiative is a crucial part of Halton’s traffic enforcement strategy. Any vehicles found to be unsafe will be taken off the road, police say.

Besides the mechanical fitness of vehicles, cargo and the corresponding administrative paperwork required to be carried by certain drivers will also be inspected.

Light commercial vehicles such as small panel trucks, cube vans and pick-up trucks with trailers will also be subject to this inspection.

Last year a total of 477 trucks were inspected over the two-day period.

Also, at the event last year, 331 charges were laid and 156 trucks were taken out of service, representing a 33 per cent failure rate, or one in three trucks inspected.

The goal of this event is to send a message to commercial motor vehicle operators who travel on these roadways that compliance to rules and regulations is non-negotiable and that the safety of others will not be compromised.

The event kicked off today with Deputy Chief of Police Nishan Duraiappah addressing the assembled law enforcement officers.

Approximately 75 law enforcement officers from across the GTA have confirmed attendance.
